Vis runway soon to be brought back from history
Vis airfield was originally built by American army in 1944 as a secret air base. Due to its strategic position, it acted as an emergency landing field for allies. 218 airplanes and over a thousand pilots and crew members were saved. It was also used as a refill station for famous B-17s, or Flying Fortresses, and for B-24s, the Liberators. Remains of both were discovered in the waters near Vis, as history reminders and diving attractions.
After the war, Vis was turned into Yugoslav military base and was cut off from foreign visitors right up until 1989. The isolation preserved the island from development, making it now a hot destination for tourists, seeking authenticity, nature, gourmet delights and peace and quiet.
The runway that was abandoned and afterwards turned into a vineyard, is being rebuild by Fly Vignette, along with all the infrastructure that an airfield of Fly Vignette standards needs.
On associated aerodromes, Fly Vignette provides discounts on landing and take-off operation fees and on other aerodrome services.
